I love nature, coffee, and research, in that order. I'm a long-time K-12 urban public school teacher and administrator. I've helped thousands of kids get into California's mountains, deserts, and oceans. My vision is that school accountability and finance systems make it easy for all students to spend quality time outdoors each year.

I am a Bilingual Education Specialist at California Academy of Sciences. I love seeing students become young advocates for environmental awareness and conservation. I love teaching young minds, but I also enjoy communicating the wonders of the natural world with their families. Being able to provide an inclusive community by interpreting/translating to our Spanish speaking community is something I'm very passionate about.

Through Bio-Rad Laboratories I support teachers using modern biology techniques in their classrooms with a focus on biotechnology. I'm interested in expanding the use of biotechnology tools in citizen science projects. I also work in a non-profit Calnature.org that organizes Bioblitzs and other forms of public engagement with the natural world around them. I have a deep background in genomic sequencing and photography. I have a big interest in how to probe the microworld in Bioblitzes via optical tools and DNA sequencing. damon_tighe@bio-rad.com

Science teaching should be exciting and fun for both teachers and their students. Great teaching includes using inquiry and inviting explorations. Service learning links classroom topics with their application in projects that improve the local environment.

One of my true loves lies in teaching. That moment when a student's eyes and face light up because of something you taught them, that they finally "got", or when they try something new and they are amazed with the results. I love being a part of that! I love the idea that as educators, we can open a whole new (or a different world) to our students. A world in which they may not have truly seen or experienced before. It is a great feeling to open that door to learning, to exploring, and to ignite that flame within them, so they thirst for more!

I have been an educator for 20 years, both in the field and in the classroom. I believe in bringing relevance to education by working with the important topics of personal and environmental health, technology in education, brain research, and investigating connections through systems thinking. I am enthusiastic about exploring ways to bring science to life using both the natural world and the tools of technology. One of my favorite ways to integrate innovation with a reverence for nature is through Biomimicry. I incorporate this idea into my classes and I am a public speaker on the topic for... Read more
