I love nature, coffee, and research, in that order. I'm a long-time K-12 urban public school teacher and administrator. I've helped thousands of kids get into California's mountains, deserts, and oceans. My vision is that school accountability and finance systems make it easy for all students to spend quality time outdoors each year.

I am a Bilingual Education Specialist at California Academy of Sciences. I love seeing students become young advocates for environmental awareness and conservation. I love teaching young minds, but I also enjoy communicating the wonders of the natural world with their families. Through Bio-Rad Laboratories I support teachers using modern biology techniques in their classrooms with a focus on biotechnology. I'm interested in expanding the use of biotechnology tools in citizen science projects. I also work in a non-profit Calnature.org that organizes Bioblitzs and other forms of public engagement with the natural world around them. I have a deep background in genomic sequencing and photography. I have a big interest in how to probe the microworld in Bioblitzes via optical tools and DNA sequencing. damon_tighe@bio-rad.com

Science teaching should be exciting and fun for both teachers and their students. Great teaching includes using inquiry and inviting explorations. Service learning links classroom topics with their application in projects that improve the local environment.
